Over that year, the most important thing was adapting to a new environment while also delivering results within it. I’ve been asked a lot of questions this past year.
The one I got most often was, ‘Why did you leave Samsung for Coupang?’
The honest answer isn’t simple. It’s a very personal reason, and my answer and how each listener interprets it were never going to line up perfectly.
The second most common question was, ‘What’s your area of expertise?’ I’d like to answer that one this way: the thing I know best and have experienced most deeply is Global R&D.
Of course, the concept of Global R&D itself can sound vague and broad.
But through more than 20 years of experience, and through my MBA studies, I’ve explored this area in depth from a range of angles — strategy, organization, finance, and more.
Along the way I’ve given advice to many people, and some have suggested I pull it all together into a lecture or a book. I didn’t think that would be easy at first, but I’ve come around to feeling that it’s time to organize my thinking.
So going forward, I’m going to use LinkedIn to lay out my thoughts and experience on Global R&D, one piece at a time. The goal is simple: share my experience, broaden the perspective together with others wrestling with the same questions, and create opportunities to keep learning. (There are truly so many people out there who know far more than I do!)
I’ll aim to write and share at least once a week.
